Contempt proceedings sought against Muslim leaders for alleged statements against SC’s Ayodhya judgment

New Delhi: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against some Muslim leaders for allegedly making contemptuous statements against the Ayodhya verdict.

The petition filed by advocate Vineet Jindal seeks contempt proceedings against Samajwadi Party MP Shafikur Rehman, Maulana Mohd Wali Rahmani, General Secretary of AIMPLB and Sajid Rashidi, president of All India Imam Association.

According to Jindal’s petition, when the foundation of the Lord Ram Temple was laid, the alleged contemnors started scandalizing the authority of the apex court by saying: “BJP and RSS on strength of their power have taken decision in their favour from the court and laid down the foundation of temple and killed secularism.”

It has further been submitted that “the alleged contemnors are trying to push in the mind of minorities that the judgement of this Hon’ble Court has been obtained by influence of BJP and RSS and thus they are trying to lower the authority of this Hon’ble Court.”

Hence the petitioner has prayed that since “there is large scale, universal, defiant and willful disobedience of the order of this Hon’ble Court, therefore the time has come for contemnors to be punished with the maximum possible imprisonment and fine.”
