The Supreme Court today granted temporary parole of four weeks to Sahara chief Subrata Roy, lodged in Tihar jail since March 2014, to perform the last rites of his mother, Chhabi Roy, who died this morning in Lucknow after prolonged illness. His brother-in-law Ashok Roy Choudhary will also be temporarily released for similar period.
The bench of Chief Justice of India also laid down certain conditions while permitting the release. The court directed that Roy will be be escorted by a team of plainclothes police officials, further adding that the team shall lodge the applicants back in Tihar jail after the parole period is over.
Sahara’s counsel, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, meanwhile, assured the court that there would not be any “attempt to escape” as Roy’s passport has already been confiscated.
Roy’a release came a day after SEBI opposed the parole against the collateral of land worth Rs 6000 crore.
The registry of Supreme Court will communicate the order to Delhi government and Superintendent of Tihar Jail so that there is no delay.
