New Delhi: The state government today informed the Delhi High Court that it will provide widows Rs 2,500 as monthly pension and a one-time payment of Rs 1 lakh for the marriage of their daughters. It also said that a one-time payment of Rs 20,000 will be provided to women in distress, under various schemes.
The government said this during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation in which the petitioner alleged that around 12,000 widows were denied pension during COVID-19, without any valid reasons.
While hearing the petition through video conferencing, a divisional bench comprising Chief Justice D.N Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan noted that good work of the government should be highlighted as the amount being provided for the marriage of widows’ daughters has been enhanced from Rs 60,000 to Rs 1 lakh.
Harpal Singh Rana, a social worker, filed the petition through his advocate Akhil Rana, seeking directions to the respondents to release the amount of widow pensioners on an urgent basis after due verification of the beneficiaries whose pensions were withheld and discontinued on imaginary grounds. The bench further appreciated the work of both the government and the petitioner and observed that, “We see no reason to further monitor this petition and hence dispose it off.”
