Assamese migrant labourer gang-raped: Madras High Court says ‘Bharathabhoomi’ now ‘a land of rapists’

New Delhi (ILNS): Rapes have almost become de rigueur in India. Every day one hears of more horrific incidents. A time may come when the entire population would have become desensitised enough to ignore such news. The high courts, however, have kept vigil. Yesterday, the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench took suo motu cognisance of the brutal gang rape and killing of a Dalit girl in Hathras in UP. The same day, The Madras High court came face to face with the gang rape of an Assamese migrant worker in Tiruppur district. The court observed: The holy land of ‘Bharathabhoomi’ is now “a land of rapists”.

The court was pained enough to make that statement. The bench observed that a rape occurs in India every 15 minutes, according to information reaching here.

The case being heard was about the plight of migrant labourers and advocate A.P. Suryaprakasam was arguing. That was when the lawyer mentioned the rape case before the bench. Six persons had raped the 22-year-old woman.

The lawyer prayed before the court to “provide shelter and care for the affected woman and also to direct the Director General of Police to set up a special investigation team headed by Inspector General, Coimbatore.” The lawyer also asked the bench for financial assistance for the woman.”

The court directed the government to do the same.
