Madhya Pradesh High Court asks state govt to re-examine permission to cut trees on Dumna Road

The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Friday directed the state government to re-examine permission granted to cut trees on Dumna Road.

The division bench of Chief Justice (Acting) Sanjay Yadav and Justice Vijay Kumar Shukla has scheduled the next hearing of the case on January 4. In the PIL filed by environmentalist Nikita Khamparia, a resident of Ganganagar Colony, Jabalpur, it has been said that the four-lane road from Rani Durgavati University to Dumna Airport is being constructed. Trees are being cut for road construction. The PIL said that more than 300 trees have been cut so far.

During the hearing on Friday, petitioner’s advocate Shreyas Pandit argued that the trees are being harvested with permission from the Municipal Corporation, while Dumna area falls under City Forest. Permission should be obtained from the Central Government under Section 2 of the Forest Protection Act to cut trees in this area.

After the hearing, the High Court has asked the state government to conduct a re-examination with respect to the permission granted to cut trees. The petitioner has been raising issues of environmental protection in the past as well.
