Delhi HC seeks AIIMS’ response on STP construction near Gautam Nagar

A single-judge bench of Justice Pratibha M. Singh issued notice in the petition and has directed AIIMS to submit a detailed reply.

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought the response of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in a plea seeking direction to stop the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP) which may lead to health hazard for the people living near Gautam Nagar residential area.

A single-judge bench of Justice Pratibha M. Singh issued notice in the petition and has directed AIIMS to submit a detailed reply.

The petition has been filed by Gautam Nagar Residents Association alleging that the STP is being installed just 30 feet from the residential area which may lead to health hazards for the residents nearby.

The petition stated,

“There is a higher risk of inhabitants being irritable and moody. There is a higher risk of gastrointestinal diseases. There is also a risk of prevalence of pathogenic airborne micro-organisms originating from the waste water treatment plant. So, the installation of STP within such close proximity of the residential area called Gautam Nagar is a clear violation of fundamental rights guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.”
