Covid-19 surge: Delhi High Court to hear only urgent matters from April 19

The order issued by the High Court's Registrar General Manoj Jain also stated that the cases filed before the court between March 22, 2020 and December 31, 2020 shall not be heard for now and would be adjourned en bloc.

In wake of the alarming rise in the Covid-18 cases in New Delhi, the Delhi High Court has decided to hear only urgent matters. The High Court on Sunday issued an official statement that said it will only take up extremely urgent matters filed in the year 2021 from April 19.

The order issued by the High Court’s Registrar General Manoj Jain also stated that the cases filed before the court between March 22, 2020 and December 31, 2020 shall not be heard for now and would be adjourned en bloc. Similarly, other pending cases or non-urgent matters shall not be taken up for hearing.

In case of an extreme urgency, the request in the pending matters may be made on the already notified link, the statement read.

The order comes amid the soaring cases of Covid-19 in the capital and Chief Justice D.N. Patel testing positive. At least three other high court judges also tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this week.

The Delhi High Court, which had resumed full-fledged physical hearing from March 15, but decided to go for virtual proceedings from April 9 to April 23 in view of an alarming rise in COVID-19 cases in the national capital.

Delhi reported 25,500 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, breaking its record of highest-ever single-day.
