Election Commission advocate Mohit Ram resigns, cites conflict in values

Ram, who has held the post since 2013, wrote a letter to the Director of the Law Commission conveying his decision.

Advocate Mohit D Ram who has been representing the Election Commission (EC) before the Supreme Court, has resigned from the panel of advocates of the EC, citing the conflict in values.

Ram, who has held the post since 2013, wrote a letter to the Director of the Law Commission conveying his decision.

Rao’s letter reads, “It was an honour to represent the Election Commission of India (ECI). I had a cherishing milestone of my career, in the journey which began with being part of the office of Standing Counsel of ECI and progressed as one of the panel counsels of ECI (since 2013)”.

“It was an honour to represent the Election Commission of India (ECI). I had a cherishing milestone of my career, in the journey which began with being part of the office of Standing Counsel of ECI and progressed as one of the panel counsels of ECI (since 2013),” Ram’s resignation letter said.

In the resignation letter, Ram further said, “I undertake to ensure smooth transition of files, NOC and ‘vakalatnamas’ in all pending matters with my office.”

It is pertinent to note that the Madras High Court last week observed that the ECI should probably be put up for murder charges in view of its failure to curb the “wanton abuse” of Covid-19 protocol during election rallies.

The ECI responded with a plea in the court to gag the media on reporting oral observations like these, which was rejected by the Madras High Court. ECI then approached the Supreme Court, which also refused to gag the media.
