The Calcutta High Court on Friday withdrew from a dispute between two transgender groups and asked the police to take the matter to its logical conclusion instead.
The group that appealed to court had complained of threats from the other group. A complaint in this regard has been lodged with the Topsia police station. Amitesh Banerjee, Senior Counsel appearing for the State, submitted that this is essentially a dispute for control of territory by one group of transgenders against others.
Justice Rajasekhar Mantha also read in the petition that one group comprised non-Indians, a claim that was put to rest by the police with documents. The court directed that all documents be kept on record with the police and said: “This Court does not wish to enter into the dispute. However, the OC, Topsia police station shall ensure that there is no breach of peace in the area. The said Topsia Police Station shall at their discretion depending on the turn of events at a later stage, register any FIR in accordance with law.”
