95% of matters before Supreme Court are frivolous, laments Justice Chandrachud

He said that in the absence of such frivolous pleas, the judges would have been able to utilise the time to matters of national importance.

The Supreme Court judge Justice D.Y. Chandrachud on Tuesday observed that 95% of the cases which are filed in the top court are frivolous in nature. He said that this was taking away the judges’ time. He said that in the absence of such frivolous pleas, the judges would have been able to utilise the time to matters of national importance.

“I had to upload the suo motu Covid order yesterday after I completed the order writing last evening. When I read the matters listed on my board for today, I found that 95% petitions are frivolous,” the judge said.

“We want to devote our time to matters of national importance, but we are unable to do so. Please respect the sanctity of the institution. This wastes the time and the tax payers are paying money for the time that you are wasting,” he added. He remarked that these frivolous petitions which are filed in the Apex Court are making it dysfunctional.

These observations were made by the bench when two back-to-back frivolous petitions came to the bench’s consideration, and the counsel, appearing on behalf of the petitioner, insisted that the bench listen to their matter, despite the court saying that these matters have no grounds for the relief they sought.
