Justice Arun Mishra, retired judge of the Supreme Court, today took charge as chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Justice Mishra was appointed as Judge of Madhya Pradesh High Court in 1999, and also served as Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court and Calcutta High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2014. He retired from the Supreme Court on September 3, 2020.
When the Appointments Committee recommended the name of Justice Mishra to head the panel, it was vehemently opposed by Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge.

Others members of the panel were Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
