Supreme Court Collegium recommends 8 judges, 1 senior advocate as SC Judges

The Supreme Court currently has only one woman judge, Justice Indira Banerjee, who is set to retire in September 2022. There have only been eight women judges in the Supreme Court till date.

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the names of eight judges and a senior advocate, including three women judges, to be appointed as judges in the Apex Court.

In the recommendation sent to the Central government, the Collegium has recommended the names of three women High Court judges, Justice B.V. Nagarathna of the Karnataka High Court, Telangana High Court Chief Justice Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Bela Trivedi of the Gujarat High Court.

If the Centre fulfills the recommendations of the collegium, then Justice Nagarathna can become the first woman Chief Justice of India.

The Collegium has recommended the names of Justice A.S. Oka, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice J.K. Maheshwari, Justice C.T. Ravindra Kumar, Justice M.M. Sundaresh.

Apart from all this, the Collegium has recommended the name of Senior Advocate P.S. Narasimha to the Centre for appointing him as a judge. The recommendations, if accepted, will fill all current vacancies in the Supreme Court, and will take the court’s working strength to 33.

The Supreme Court currently has only one woman judge, Justice Indira Banerjee, who is set to retire in September 2022. There have only been eight women judges in the Supreme Court till date. The Apex Court has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges, but is functioning now with 25 judges.
