The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted four weeks’ protection from arrest to Raj Kundra, businessman and actor Shilpa Shetty’s husband, in the case of shooting and streaming pornographic content. The Apex Court also issued notice to the Maharashtra government.
Earlier in November, Kundra’s anticipatory bail application was rejected by the Bombay High Court after which the businessman moved the Supreme Court.
The businessman had sought pre-arrest bail in regard to an FIR filed against him in October 2020 by the Mumbai Police in the porn case.
In the anticipatory bail plea filed by Kundra, he claimed the contents of the video could be categorised as erotic in nature but did not display any sexual or physical activity. He claimed that he was not involved in the making or broadcasting of those videos and had been wrongly linked in the case adding that the Cyber Cell was trying to connect Kundra with the crime.
In July this year, Mumbai Police had arrested Raj Kundra for allegedly producing and distributing porn films through subscription-based mobile app HotShots.
On July 23, Shilpa Shetty was questioned by the Crime Branch for her alleged involvement in the businesses of her husband, wherein, she denied knowledge of porn films and disclosed to authorities that they were merely erotica. Shetty had also recorded her statement to the Mumbai police and there had been a search of the couple’s Mumbai residence. Kundra has been out on bail since September 20.
