7 Supreme Court judges not to take up hearing today due to Covid-19

The Supreme Court Registry has said that seven Supreme Court judges will not be able to conduct hearings on Wednesday as they have contracted Covid-19.

According to official sources, the coronavirus has so far infected 30 percent workforce of the Supreme Court.

Those exhibiting mild symptoms have been kept in home isolation, whereas serious cases have been admitted to the hospital. Chief Justice of India Justice N.V. Ramana is monitoring the entire matter.

Of the total strength of the Supreme Court, which comprises 32 judges, 10 judges have contracted coronavirus so far.

According to the circular issued on January 18  by the Supreme Court Registry, seven judges will not sit to hear the cases today.

Judges down with Covid-19 include Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice S. Ravindra Bhat, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Surya Kant and Justice B.V. Nagarathana, Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice V. Ramasubramaniam. They will be unable to attend or conduct proceedings.

On January 9, four judges of the Supreme Court were found coronavirus positive, a week later their number had swelled to double.

Apart from this, about 400 workers of the Supreme Court are also said to be coronavirus infected. RTPCR tests are being conducted in the Supreme Court on a regular basis.

According to the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), if the infection rate remains more than 5 percent for two consecutive days, then this situation will begin to look alarming.
