Assembly elections under Covid-19 shadow: Supreme Court disposes of plea

The Supreme Court on Friday disposed of the plea seeking directions to the Election Commission of India to issue Covid-19 norms to all political parties against physical rallies in the wake of Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa.

The matter came up before the bench of Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Surya Kant. The bench stated that the election is almost over in Uttar Pradesh and the Covid-19 situation is very different today.

The petitioner-in-person Advocate Chandan Kumar Singh withdrew this matter as the elections has already been conducted. He further added that the matter was filed in the month of December 2021 and it got listed today i.e. March 4, 2022, to which the bench replied, If you find any of the judges not sitting then only complain.”

The petitioner highlighted that due to the political rallies by the political parties a large number of people are being participated even without a mask and without following Covid-19 protocol which has been laid down by the NDMA, DDMA and any other authorities.

The petition had said political leaders were maintaining double standards by holding a meeting as to what was to be done with the Covid-19 situation and on the other hand, political parties were holding rallies with lakhs of people and the ECI is just a mute spectator. The petitioner questioned why people are fooled during elections and night curfews and weekend lockdowns are announced at the same time.
