The Supreme Court has granted time till May 31, 2022 to former Rajya Sabha MP Sharad Yadav to vacate the official bungalow allotted to him in Lutyens’ Delhi, which he has been occupying for more than four years after his disqualification from the Rajya Sabha.
The bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and Surya Kant granted Yadav time since his counsel had pleaded with the bench in the last hearing that he was suffering from poor health.
The Apex Court granted two months’ time after an undertaking was given by Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar that the bungalow will be vacated in two months.
The Central Government had said in lieu of staying for 2 months, Yadav should pay rent for the bungalow.
Yadav’s counsel contended that since his disqualification from the Rajya Sabha is pending, there is no point in charging rent. The Supreme Court declined comment on the issue.
Yadav had approached the Supreme Court the order to vacate the bungalow and after the Delhi High Court ordered him to leave it by March 30.
Sharad Yadav had been a Rajya Sabha MP of the Janata Dal United but he was expelled from the party for anti-party activities in 2017. He was also disqualified from his Rajya Sabha membership.
Yadav has recently joined the Rashtriya Janata Dal. He had pleaded in the Apex Court that his plea against his expulsion from the Rajya Sabha was still pending in the High Court and is to be heard on April 25. He prayed that with his term ending July, he should not be evicted from the bungalow.
The Union government has earmarked the bungalow for Lok Janshakti Party leader Pashupati Nath Paras.
