Aakar Patel files contempt plea against CBI for barring him from despite court striking down LOC against him

Aakar Patel, the former Amnesty International India chairman, has filed an application of contempt in the Rouse Avenue Courts in Delhi blaming the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of not complying  with the 7th April court’s order that directs the agency to withdraw the Look Out Circular (LOC) issued against him

Aadar Patel had approached a Delhi court earlier also when he was barred from boarding a flight to USA at Bengaluru Airport on April 6 where he was going to deliver a series of lectures.

The case against Patel is centered on the evasion of Foreign Contribution Regulation Rules (FCRA Rules) through “commercial” methods without the approval of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Amnesty UK had remitted Rs 10 crore and subsequently Rs 26 crore to its India entities.

Pawan Kumar, the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, on Thursday had set aside the LOC against Patel and ordered CBI director to send a written apology to Patel so as to restore the  public confidence in the central agency.

On Thursday night after the order came, Patel took to Twitter late night and tweeted that “Despite the courts order to recall the LOC, he was stopped at immigration yet again

After getting relief from the Court, Patel had then booked tickets once again for his wife and himself to travel to the US, before he was stopped at the airport for a second time.

The contempt plea informed that the immigration at airport tried to confirm the order but phon of the CBI’s investigating officer was not avaialable or rather switched off .

“On account of deliberate disobedience by the IO Himanshu Bahuguna, the applicant was not allowed to board the flight and yet again the became a victim of illegal act of the respondent agency in not complying with the order of the Court”

-the plea said.
