Parliamentary Standing Committee will soon pass mediation bill: Kiren Rijiju

The Mediation Bill, which is capable of bringing transformational change, is currently being examined by the Parliamentary Standing Committee and will be passed soon after incorporating necessary changes and amendments, Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju assured on Saturday.

Speaking during the two-day national conference on ‘Mediation and Information Technology’ at Ekta Nagar in Narmada of Gujarat, the Minister said the Bill is proposed to be introduced in Parliament soon, adding that the government has taken inputs from all stakeholders, along with the Supreme Court Judges, both current and retired.

“The moment it comes to us, we will pass it with a few amendments,” he added.

“Our Government is giving full attention to this subject and I am happy to announce that mediation bill being introduced in the parliament is taking good shape. We have got inputs from all stakeholders and also from Supreme Court judges. We have also got inputs from retired Supreme Court judges and this mediation bill is now with the parliamentary standing committee of law and justice. As soon as it comes to us, it will passed with all amendments needed.” 

He further mentioned that the Government is looking forward to Development and has target towards speedy redressal of cases.

“Our government headed by Prime Minister Modi is focused on speedy redressal of cases. With huge pendency of cases, it is clear that we have to look towards Alternate Dispute Resolution and also the Information Technology,” he said.

When asked if the mediation bill is capable of bringing transformational change, he replied “Mediation has been there since Ramayana and Mahabharata days. Informal justice litigants do not have wait so much.”

The Minister spoke about saying the collaborative work is being carried out by the three organs of the government – executive, legislature and judiciary, and in his opinion tall three need to work in similar direction so as to avoid any hurdles

My office is working closely with the E committee of Supreme Court headed by Justice DY Chandrachud. I even spoke with him that there is support from all states and stakeholders,” he stated.

The Law Minister also spoke about his excellent rapport with the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and whenever the two meet, excellent ideas and suggestions are shared.

“Whatever judiciary expects from the executive, we will deliver,” he remarked.

The most important thing was that the Law Minister urged the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court to immediately share with him the outcome of the conference, so that it could be implemented in letter and spirit.
