Justice Indu Prabha Singh, first woman judge of Patna High Court, passes away

Justice Indu Prabha Singh, the first woman judge of Patna High Court, passed away at 77 on June 23.

She was the first woman judge of Patna High Court and the first woman judge to hold court at Patna High Court and its Ranchi Bench.

Justice Singh joined the Bar at Patna High Court in 1971 and later in 1985, she was appointed as a Government Pleader (GP). She served as a judge for over a decade and resigned on September 1, 2007.

Justice Singh was the daughter of the late Maheshwar Sinha, Member, Senate of the Faculty of Law and of the Board of Examiners in Law, Bihar University. He also served as SKJ Law College’s Vice-Principal and Public Prosecutor at Muzaffarpur.

Justice Indu Prabha Singh ruled several landmark judgements including the Panchayati Raj case wherein the Bihar government was directed to conduct elections within a given span of time, Cessation of Unfair Means case wherein the State was ordered to conduct all examinations in a way that restrained unfair means, and the Madhepura case wherein the Election Commission was directed to do a recounting of votes which led the defeat of the former Chief Minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav.
