With the addition of six judges on Tuesday (June 13) the strength of the Madras High Court bench goes up to 53, still short of its sanctioned strength of 75. President Pranab Mukherjee singed on these appointments on Tuesday.

One lady judge has been appointed among the six.

The judges appointed from the bar as well as from among district judges are: Ms Bavani Subbaroyan, Jagdish Chandra, GR Swaminathan, Abdul Quddhose, M. Dhandapani and Aadikesavan, according to media reports.

Of the 30 names that the madras HC collegium sent for consideration in February, only six were considered. The overall list comprised 19 from the bar and 11 from among district judges. The Supreme Court had made an initial pruning of the list, keeping 24 names for consideration.

The delay in appointment was because the Memorandum of Procedure had not been finalized by the government.
