Delhi’ Karkardooma court on Thursday has called for the submission of CCTV footage of a Tihar Jail cell after former JNU student Sharjeel Imam alleged assault in the jail.
The court also directed the presence of the Jail Superintendent in the plea moved by Imam, who is currently in judicial custody in an alleged conspiracy in connection with the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.
Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat asked for the duty register of jail sevadars to be produced on the next hearing on July 20 and has directed to produce all the CCTV footage on the date of the incident.
According to the reply filed by the Jail Superintendent, a search was launched on June 30 in Ward no. 7 Block-D where Sharjeel Imam was under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent Deepak Rana, Manjeet Nagar, Assitant Superintendent, and duty warder Ravi Tomar, which is permissible as per the Delhi Prison Rules.
Imam’s lawyer Ahmad Ibrahim has alleged that the assistant superintendent of the jail along with 8-9 convicts entered his cell on June 30 and assaulted him and called him a terrorist and an anti-national.
He also claimed that his books and clothes were thrown about during the search. It further claimed that Imam pleaded with the Assistant Superintendent to prevent the assault, but his request was ignored.
