Prophet row: Supreme Court to hear Nupur Sharma’s plea against arrest tomorrow

Nupur Sharma, the suspended BJP spokesperson, filed a petition in the Supreme Court today that challenges its observations over her arrest in cases regarding her remarks on Prophet Mohammad.

Nupur Sharma in her petition to the Apex Court has asked for protection from arrest in nine FIRs registered against her claiming “after unexpected and harsh criticism by the Supreme Court” she has received “threats to her life as well as rape threats.”
The suspended leader has also asked for directions for clubbing of all the FIRs registered against her since the first FIR against her was registered in Delhi.

The petition by Nupur Sharma will be heard by the Supreme Court tomorrow.

However, it is quite surprising that the matter is listed before the same bench of Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice Surya Kant, who had rebuked her for her comment against Prophet, calling it quite a disturbing remark.

The then spokesperson of BJP Nupur Sharma, had touched the hornet’s nest when she made a controversial comment about Prophet Mohammad during a TV debate.

The comments by Sharma had triggered riots across the country and drew sharp reactions from many Gulf countries.

The Apex Court had held her responsible for the “unfortunate” incident and violence in Udaipur.

The court had said that her loose tongue has set the entire country on fire and she was single-handedly responsible for what was happening in the country.
The bench has simply refused to entertain her plea for clubbing of FIRs lodged in various states against her and said that the comments by Nupur were for cheap publicity, political agenda or some nefarious activities.
The Delhi police was pulled the Supreme Court which had registered an FIR against her.
The bench asked “What has happened in the investigation so far? What has Delhi Police done so far? Don’t make us open our mouth? They must have put a red carpet for you.”

The Supreme Court of India has been asked by a group of former judges and bureaucrats for recalling its observations alleging that the court crossed the “Laxman Rekha” while making comments that are an “indelible scar on the justice system of the largest democracy.
The group, which had 15 high court judges, 77 ex-all India service officers amd about 25 veterans, alleged that the “unfortunate” comments are not in sync with the judicial ethos and have sent “shockwaves” in the country and outside.
