The anchor and editor of Times Now news channel, Navika Kumar, has moved the Supreme Court seeking quashing of the criminal proceedings initiated against her in different states.
The news anchor has been booked in connection with the remarks made by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma against Prophet Muhammad on a debate aired by the channel
Navika has sought quashing the cases or clubbing them together and transferring them to one State. She has been booked in Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir.
After the first information reports (FIRs) were registered against Nupur Sharma in different parts of the country for her remarks about Prophet Muhammad, the Supreme Court has already issued notice on the same on a plea by Nupur Sharma.
The Times Now debate raised a storm after Nupur Sharma’s controversial remarks on debate that led to some Islamic nations conveying their objection after summoning Indian ambassadors and high commissioners.
Nupur Sharma was immediately suspended and the BJP had distanced itself from her.
On July 1, during the initial hearing of Sharma’s petition, the Supreme Court refused to entertain any plea by her stating her to be irresponsible.
The bench had remarked that Sharma was single-handedly responsible for igniting the flame of religious passions across India and should apologise to the whole country.
The top court had also made strong remarks against Times Now when the hearing was in progress.
The Apex Court asked “What was the TV debate for? Only to fan a agenda? Why did they choose a sub judice topic”
Nupur Sharma had then withdrawn her plea. Later on she again moved the Court which issued notice on July 19 and granted her interim protection.
