Supreme Court tries to dispose maximum cases in shortest possible time: CJI UU Lalit

Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit on Friday said that the Supreme Court is trying to dispose of the maximum number of cases in the shortest time possible.

Addressing an event organised by the Bar Council of India to welcome him, the CJI said that since becoming the CJI, in the past four days, he has tried his best to list the matters, which were far in excess in numbers.

He said, “In the past four days after becoming the CJI, we have managed to dispose of 1293 miscellaneous and 110 regular cases. We should remember that out of four, two were miscellaneous cases days.”

Besides, 440 transfer cases were heard and settled during this period, noted the CJI, adding that the efforts to clear the pendency will continue.

As per Justice Lalit, “This is what I aspire to achieve. The message is loud and clear, and it should reach part of the country. The Supreme Court is disposing of the maximum number of cases. We will try to settle as many cases as you are capable of bringing before us.”

Talking about his initial days as a lawyer, Justice Lalit said, “I joined the Bar in 1983. Even in my wildest dreams, I never thought of standing before the representatives of lawyers across the country one day. I could not have thought of anything better.

“When I took charge, every pair of eyes seem to be telling me, ‘We have high expectations from you’. I promise I will do my best to live up to these expectations. It is my endeavour to settle as many cases as I can.”

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Chairman of Bar Council of India Manan Mishra, lawyers from different bar associations across the country, among other distinguished guests, attended the event.

Jayant Bhave, Chairman of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa, proposed the vote of thanks.
