The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Central government over the posts of Chief Vigilance Commissioner and Vigilance Commissioners lying vacant for months.
The Apex Court, while hearing the matter, observed that the matter was pending before a larger Bench, which was hearing connected issues.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the petitioner NG Common Cause, replied that he was seeking an interim order in the case.
The Bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S. Oka issued notice to the Centre, seeking its response within three weeks.
The petition contended that the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) had invited applications for filling the post of one vigilance commissioner vide advertisement on July 17, 2020. The last date of submitting the application was August 17, 2020. It said, however, till date, no appointments have been made.
It further said that on May 4, 2021, the Department issued advertisement for filling the vacancy of the Central Vigilance Commissioner and the last date of submitting the application was June 7, 2021. However till date, no appointment has been made in this case also, it added.
It alleged that the Central government has failed to fill the long-standing vacancies in time. As per the [plea, the Centre did not abide by the Apex Court of September 22, 2021, which directed the selection committee to adopt a fair and transparent process in selection of both the CVC and Vigilance Commissioners.
