Supreme Court to hear pleas challenging Citizenship Amendment Act on September 12

The Supreme Court will take up on September 12, a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019.

The matter will be heard by a two-Judge Bench of Chief Justice of India UU Lalit and Justice S Ravindra Bhat.

The Apex Court had issued notice on a batch of more than 140 petitions in December, 2019, without staying the Act.

The Bench of then Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde, Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice Surya Kant had sought the response of the Centre on petitions, alleging religion-based discrimination.

CAA was notified on December 12, 2019 and came into force on January 10, 2020.

The Act aimed at giving citizenship to the migrants belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian communities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

The Act, along with the National Register of Citizen (NRC), was perceived as an attempt to deprive the Muslims of Indian citizenship. Protests erupted across the country against both CAA and NRC in December, 2019 and continued in some places up to March, 2020.
