Delhi Excise Policy case: Delhi High Court issues notice to news channels

A notice has been issued by the Delhi High Court on the alleged misreporting by the Republic TV, India Today, Zee News and Times about the ongoing investigation and trial in Delhi Excise Policy case where AAP leaders are accused

The Court asked the News broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA) to examine the news reports carried by these channels and inform the Court whether the broadcast were compliant with their guidelines or not.

The Court has given instructions to the news channels to make sure that reports should only go in Delhi Excise Policy case which are based on official communications issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Justice Yashwant Varma in his order said that the news channels will not be able to report source based stories regarding the case.

Channels have been asked to adhere to the guidelines that government their broadcast.

After the APP communications in-charge Vijay Nair alleging that sensitive information regarding his case was leaked by the ED and the CBI to the media, the order was given by the court.

Nair in his plea said that the channels report what questions were asked and what his answers were.

In one instance, which was pointed out in court, the news report even revealed what was the first question that that was posed to him.

The High Court had last week ordered CBI and the ED for furnishing all statements and press communications issued by them to media in relation to their investigation in Delhi government’s excise policy.

The ED today said that it has not issued any press release, CBI said that it has issued three communications regarding the investigation.

the most important point is that agencies said that broadcast referred to by Nair in his petition is not based on any details furnished by them.

The matter will now be heard in February.
