Cow slaughter case: UP court bars journalist Zakir Ali Tyagi from entering Meerut district for 3 months

Journalist Zakir Ali Tyagi has been barred from entering Meerut for three months by an Additional District Magistrate (ADM) for the 2020 cow slaughter case registered against him under the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act .

Judge Amit Kumar in an externment order passed under the Uttar Pradesh Goondas Act, found that Tyagi could disturb the law and order situation in the district, and therefore, did not allow him to enter his home district of Meerut for three months.

The judge said that further clarified that for all the other trials ongoing against Tyagi, he can appear in courts without taking permission but if he does not follow the court’s order and is found near Meerut district the police can take action against him as prescribed under the law.

An FIR was filed against Zakir Ali after a farmer alleged that he found cattle hidden in his farm.

In 2020, Zakir was also booked for selling beef in violation of the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act. He was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police for the same.

After spending 16 days in jail, he was granted bail.

The complainant had said that as Tyagi is a habitual offender, allowing him to roam free is not a good idea.

Tyagi has contended that he has been falsely implicated in the case by the district police and complainant due to enmity.
