Provocative speech: Supreme Court rejects plea seeking FIR against UP CM Yogi Adityanath

The Supreme Court on Monday disposed of a petition that sought registration of a case against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over an alleged objectionable speech made by him during an election campaign in Rajasthan’s Alwar district in 2018.

The order was passed by the Bench of Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice Vikram Nath on a petition filed by Naval Kishor Sharma of Mau district.

The Apex Court, while observing that such petitions could only be given space in page 1 of newspapers, rejected the plea.

The petitioner had earlier moved the district court of Mau, which rejected his plea.

Sharma then filed an application before the Allahabad high Court, which disposed of his plea with a cost of Rs 5,000. He challenged the High Court order in the Apex Court.

Sharma had contended in his plea that the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister had hurt the religious sentiments of people, while addressing an election rally on November 23, 2018 in Alwar district of Rajasthan.
