Chhawla rape and murder: Supreme Court agrees to constitute 3-Judge Bench to hear review plea

The petition by the Delhi police seeking review of the Supreme Court’s acquittal of the death row convicts of the gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old girl in Delhi’s Chhawla area in 2012 was mentioned before the Apex Court today.

The Supreme Court bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice JB Pardiwala was presented the matter today.

The Chief Justice of India CJI DY Chandrachud has assured that a bench shall be constituted which would have him (CJI),Justice Ravindra Bhat, and Justice Bela Trivedi for hearing the matter in an open court.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta talked about the crime which was example of brutality. He mentioned that an 18 year old was raped, mutilated, killed.

Talking about the rape,SGI mentioned how objects were inserted in the victims private parts. Initially, the accused were awarded Death penalty by the Delhi High Court and trial court, however Apex court acquitted them.

SGI asked for a review. After review, one of the accused slit throat of someone else. They’re hardened criminal so all that needs to be done is open court hearing.

The Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said–agreed to consider open court hearing and said he will talk to my fellow judges.”

The three accused Rahul, Ravi and Vinod were charged for abducting the girl while she was returning home from her work place on 9th February 2012.

A mutilated body of the girl was found by the police near Rewari in Haryana on 14th February with multiple wounds.

During the autopsy it was found out that she was attacked, raped and acid was poured on her eyes.
