Centre approves appointment of Justice Jaswant Singh as Chief Justice of Tripura High Court

The Union government on Sunday notified the appointment of Justice Jaswant Singh of Orissa High Court as the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court.

As per a notification posted on the website of Ministry of Law and Justice, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Jaswant Singh, Judge of the High Court of Orissa to be Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”

On January 25 this year, the Supreme Court Collegium had proposed the appointment of Justice Singh as the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court.

Earlier, the Collegium had recommended the appointment of Justice Singh as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court.

However, the recommendation was recalled on January 25 and the Collegium recommended elevation of Justice Singh as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court.

Justice Jaswant Singh studied law and business administration from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak before enrolling as an Advocate in 1986.

From March 1991 till his elevation, he held the posts of Assistant Advocate General, Deputy Advocate General, Senior Deputy Advocate General and Additional Advocate General, in the office of Advocate General, Haryana.

He was elevated to the Bench in 2007 as a judge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court before being transferred to the Orissa High Court in 2021.
