Atiq Ahmad murder case: Prayagraj court sends three accused to 4-day police custody

A local court in Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday remanded the three people, accused in the murder case of Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf, to four-day police custody.

The Magistrate Court in Prayagraj directed the accused to be presented before it on April 23, at the expiry of police remand.

Atiq and Ashraf were shot dead on April 15, when they were being taken for a medical examination to a hospital in Prayagraj. The incident took place amid the presence of police and the media.

The accused, identified as Sunny Singh (23) of Hamirpur, Lavlesh Tiwari (22) of Banda and Arun Maurya (18) of Kasganj, reached the hospital premises posing as journalists. They fired indiscriminately at the Ahmad brothers from point-blank range in full media glare, leading to on-the-spot death of both Atiq and Ashraf.

The incident was captured live on television channels. On April 13, Atiq’s son Asad was also killed in an encounter.

The accused have been booked under IPC Section 302, along with Sections 3, 7, 25, and 27 of the Arms Act, 1959, and other relevant Sections.

A Prayagraj court had earlier sent the accused to 14-day judicial custody.

The UP government has, meanwhile, set up a judicial commission to inquire into the matter under the Commission of Inquiry Act 1952, to be led by retired Allahabad High Court Judge Arvind Kumar Tripathi.
