Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Chandrachud on Wednesday inaugurated the Supreme Court Sports, Cultural & Other Events- 2023, an extravaganza comprising 12 sports and nine cultural events, which will witness participation from 970 court employees.
As per the CJI, the purpose behind organising the sports and cultural events was to encourage a ‘holistic’ pattern of living for the staff, along with promoting their physical and mental well-being.
On the occasion, he mentioned some of the welfare measures being planned for the staff, including a bigger and better equipped creche, a training centre and a staff library, among others.
The CJI further referred to his recent administrative decision to change nomenclatures of certain designated posts such as ‘Jamadar’ to ‘supervisor,’ as they reflected a colonial mindset, which did not have any place in a modern society.
Inaugurating the events, CJI Chandrachud greatly encouraged the women staff members to participate in the upcoming sports events, emphasising that they were no less than their male counterparts.
He further distributed track suits for the events to select staff members, including persons with disabilities.
CJI Chandrachud inaugurated the event by trying his hands at carrom.
Secretary General of the Supreme Court, Sanjeev Kalgaonkar, later joined him at the carrom board.
