The Delhi police has filed the charge sheet against the BJP MP and former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for outraging modesty of woman.
The former WFI chief was alleged of stalking and other offences under the Indian Penal Code based on a complaint of sexual harassment filed by prominent female wrestlers.
The wrestlers had moved a magisterial court in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue District seeking registration of a first information report (FIR) against Singh.
however the wrestlers had move a chargesheet but they still continued protest against Singh at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.
The wrestlers previously through their lawyers had pressed for a court-monitored probe besides urging the court to seek a status report.
The police has filed a chargesheet for offences under Sections 354 (outraging modesty), 354A (sexually coloured remarks), 354D (stalking) and 506 (1) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Special Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava confirmed to Bar & Bench on Thursday.
However, in view of a minor wrestler withdrawing the allegations against Singh, the police filed a cancellation report in the cases filed for offences under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act).
The wrestlers had earlier moved the Supreme Court for registration of the FIR against Singh. Subsequently the Supreme Court was informed by Delhi Police that FIR was registered and the investigation was on track and statements were being recorded.
Taking into account the assurances given by the Delhi police, the Supreme Court had closed the case and noted that it had earlier directed that security be provided to complainants, and that the same has also been done by the Delhi Police.
For any other relief the petitioners may move the appropriate jurisdictional magisterial court or the High Court, the apex court had added.
