The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed two public interest litigations, which sought directions to gradually phase out the current reservation system, besides reclassification of the current caste system prevalent in the country.
Terming the petitions as ‘frivolous’ and an abuse of the process of the court, the Bench of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice P.S. Narasimha imposed a cost of Rs 25,000 each on the petitioner. Both the petitions have been filed by Advocate Sachin Gupta.
Hearing the plea seeking reclassification of caste system in India, the Apex Court initially proposed to impose a cost of Rs one lakh, however, it eventually directed the petitioner to pay cost of Rs 25,000 to the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
In another plea by Gupta seeking gradual phasing out of the current reservation system in the country and replacing it with an alternative method, the Apex Court directed Gupta to deposit Rs 25,000 as cost with the Advocate Welfare Fund of the Supreme Court within two weeks.
