Gurugram land scam: Supreme Court constitutes SIT to probe involvement of Sub-Registrar, other officials

The Supreme Court has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged involvement of officials from Land Registering Authorities and others in a land scam related to duping an elderly NRI couple.

The Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice C.T. Ravikumar directed the Gurugram Police Commissioner to personally monitor on a day-to-day basis, the probe being conducted by the SIT and directed the team to submit its report within two months.

It ordered the Commissioner of Police, Gurugram to ensure that the SIT was headed by an officer not below the rank of Dy SP and consisted of two Inspectors as its members.

The Bench gave liberty to the SIT to subject the accused as well as the officers at the Sub-Registrar’s office to custodial investigation.

The SIT was further permitted to seek modification of the Trial Court/High Court order granting anticipatory bail to those involved in the present matter.

The Apex Court observed that prima facie the submissions of the accused who had sold the concerned property, the buyers and the Sub-Registrar lacked conviction. It added that they seem to be acting in cohorts with the ulterior notice to dupe the original land owners, an elderly NRI couple.

The top court of the country directed the authorities of NCT of Delhi to cooperate in verification of allegedly forged General Power of Attorney, which was registered at the office of the Sub Registrar, Kalkaji, New Delhi in 1996.
