WFI sexual harassment case: Delhi Court grants interim bail to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh

A Delhi court has granted interim bail to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) and president of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh till July 20, in the sexual harassment case against him.

As per the information, the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Harjeet Singh Jaspal of the Rouse Avenue Courts has granted interim bail to Brij Bhushan Sharan and Vinod Tomar.

The arguments on regular bail plea of Sharan Court will be heard on Thursday.

The Additional Public Prosecutor for Delhi Police opposed the bail with the condition that he should not influence witnesses.

On July 7, Judge Jaspal had issued summons to Singh along with Vinod Tomar, the suspended assistant secretary of the WFI.

The Court had taken cognisance of Delhi Police’s chargesheet in the sexual harassment case filed by women wrestlers against Singh.

Six female wrestlers have levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Singh. Based on their complaints, Police had registered a first information report (FIR).

On June 15, 2023, a chargesheet was filed by police against Singh for offences under Sections 354 (outraging modesty), 354A (sexually coloured remarks), 354D (stalking) and 506 (1) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Wrestlers had staged a protest over the failure of the authorities to act on sexual harassment allegations levelled against Singh.

They had also moved the Supreme Court for registration of an FIR against Singh.

Subsequently, the Supreme Court was informed by Delhi Police that an FIR was registered and that the investigation was on track.

A minor wrestler had also levelled allegations against Singh. However, she later withdrew her complaint and the Delhi Police filed a cancellation report in that case.
