The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to the government of Manipur and the state police over the alleged parading of two girls and gangrape of one of them at B Phainom village of Kangpokpi district in Manipur.
Video of the incident, which took place on May 4, had recently gone viral, sending shockwaves across the country.
Following the outrage and complaints seeking its urgent intervention into the incident, the Commission issued notice to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Manipur, directing them to submit a detailed report into the matter within four weeks.
The senior government officials were told to include in the report the status of investigation of the FIRs registered with regard to the incidents, the health status of the victim women and other injured person as well as compensation, if any, granted to the aggrieved persons or their families.
The rights body further sought information about the steps taken or proposed to be taken to safeguard the human rights of the citizens, especially women and vulnerable sections of the society from such barbaric incidents in future.
