CJI DY Chandrachud calls for just, cleaner society on Gandhi Jayanti

Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on Monday stressed on having a cleaner, more transparent and accountable legal system, stating that cleaning the physical environment was not enough, but the journey in pursuit of a just and cleaner society should continue.

On the birth anniversaries of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and freedom fighter and former Primer Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, the CJI, whose message was read out at the event, said the occasion served as a reminder of the common commitment to justice, integrity and upholding the values of the Indian Constitution.

Remembering the Father of the Nation on his 154th birth anniversary, the CJI said that his principles of non-violence, truth and self-discipline continued to inspire people in their pursuit of justice.

Paying tributes to Lal Bahadur Shastri, he stressed upon the stalwart leader’s vision for a strong and self-reliant India. He said cleanliness, as Mahatma Gandhi emphasised, was not just a physical act, but a reflection of one’s inner state.

The Supreme Court of India, in association with the SCBA, marked the birth anniversaries of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi and freedom fighter Lal Bahadur Shastri by organising a cleanliness drive.

Supreme Court judges Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice K. V. Viswanathan garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and the photograph of Lal Bahadur Shastri to mark the occasion.

Justice Sanjeev Khanna stressed on the relevance of Gandhian philosophy and quoted the Father of the Nation saying, “Facts mean truth and once we adhere to truth, the law comes to our aid naturally.”

Justice Khanna further paid his tributes to Lal Bahadur Shastri, saying that he was a true Gandhian, who worked with selfless devotion for the country.
