The Delhi High Court on Wednesday (August 16) ruled that a committee be formed to inspect encroachments on Delhi roads and take proper steps to remove them. According to the court order, the committee will comprise all the three commissioners of South Delhi Municipal Corporation, North Delhi Municipal Corporation, and East Delhi Municipal Corporation, respectively; Additional Commissioner of Delhi Police and Additional Commissioner of Delhi Traffic police. The panel will work under the supervision of the Director of Local bodies, Delhi. The High Court further ruled that the committee shall submit its report within six weeks.

The matter will be taken up again on October 11, 2017.

Before the order came in, the petitioner pointed out that there was rampant illegal parking and encroachments over footpaths in Delhi, and such was the scenario that the pedestrians were unable to use the footpaths. The counsel for respondent (Commissioner South Delhi Municipal Corporation & Ors) pleaded that a committee be formed to inspect the situation at ground zero and chart out a plan of action.
