Supreme Court to consider listing pleas on finalising constitution of All India Football Federation

The Supreme Court today agreed to consider listing of the pleas relating to the All India Football Federation and finalisation of its constitution that was framed by former apex court judge Justice L Nageswara Rao.

A bench of Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra took note of the submissions of Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, who is assisting the court as an amicus curiae, that the pleas needed to be heard.

Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan informed the top court that it was said on March 19 that the pleas will be listed on April 5, that is today. Subsequently, the bench assured that the case will be fixed for hearing soon. The apex court seized two separate clutches of petitions relating to the Indian Olympic Association and the All India Football Federation.

Notably, the report submitted by Justice Rao, shall be circulated by Senior Advocate Gopal Sankarnarayanan to all the parties desirous of securing the soft copies. It had further directed that the objections to the All India Football Federation’s draft constitution be filed.

Earlier on May 2, 2023, the Supreme Court urged Justice L Nageswara Rao to also formulate a comprehensive report on finalising the All India Football Federation constitution after taking cognizance of the objections to a draft document by several stakeholders including FIFA, which is the apex global body that governs football.

In addition, it is reported that the voluminous objections to the draft constitution by multiple stakeholders could be taken care of by Justice L Nageswara Rao, who had previously finalised the constitution of the Indian Olympic Association on the orders of the Supreme Court.

The three judge bench was hearing a plea related to the finalisation of the constitution of the All India Football Federation after taking note of clause-by-clause objections of various stakeholders of football across the country.
