In order to reduce the pendency of cases, as well as to commemorate 75 years of its establishment, the Supreme Court on Monday organised a special six-day Lok Adalat at its premises.
As per the Supreme Court website, this is the first time that a six-day Lok Adalat has been set up exclusively to clear Supreme Court cases.
With an aim to facilitate amicable settlements of suitable pending cases, the top court of the country invited lawyers to present cases having elements of settlement. These include cases concerning matrimonial and property disputes, motor accident claims, land acquisition, compensation, service and labour.
Announcing the Special Lok Adalat, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that the Apex Court was organising a special Lok Adalat, as part of a series of activities to commemorate the 75th year of its establishment.
He said the judges of the Apex Court were dedicated to the institution of justice and concerned about the large backlog of cases.
Calling Lok Adalat a very informal, technology-based solution to resolve cases involving the citizens to their satisfaction in a purely voluntary and consensual mode, he appealed to the citizens who had cases before the Supreme Court, along with lawyers and advocates-on-record, to take advantage and benefit of this opportunity in an attempt to resolve their cases speedily, in a manner acceptable to every contesting party.
The special Lok Adalat, which will culminate on August 3, aims at facilitating amicable settlements of suitable cases pending in the top court of the country.
For the convenience of members of the bar, litigants and all stakeholders, the Registry has created separate, dedicated video conference links for Special Lok Adalat in Court Nos. 1 to 7 for the week.
Two Supreme Court judges, along with a senior advocate and one Advocate-on-Record, will hear 2,200 cases during the Lok Adalat, which will be held every day from July 29 to August 3, between 2 pm to 5 pm. Litigants will also be present in the specified seven courts for their cases.
Lok Adalats are an integral component of the judicial system in the country, which enhance alternative dispute resolution as a means of expediting and fostering amicable settlements.
Organising of the ensuing Lok Adalat is pursuant to the commitment to accessible and efficient justice delivery for all sections of society.
Cases having elements of settlement including cases relating to matrimonial and property disputes, motor accident claims, land acquisition, compensation, service and labour, which are pending before the Supreme Court, will be taken up to facilitate speedy disposal.
As on June 30, 2024, the number of pending cases in the Supreme Court stood at 84,280.
