Justice and the President

Not only does President Droupadi Murmu’s leadership exhibit a commitment to making India’s justice system more just and equitable, she clearly understands the lacunae that haunt the system

By Pradeep Rai

President Droupadi Murmu’s leadership exhibits a deep commitment to transforming India’s legal system into one that is more just and equitable. Her approach, shaped by her understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized communities, reflects a dedication to making justice accessible to all. Having had the privilege of knowing her personally, I can attest to her sincerity and resolve in this mission.

Women’s safety

President Murmu has consistently emphasized the need to strengthen legal frameworks to enhance women’s safety. She has stated: “It is imperative to strengthen our legal framework to ensure the safety and dignity of women. Legal reforms should focus on swift justice and stringent punishment for offenders.” This should resonate well with people in rural and underserved areas.

In my view, addressing women’s safety requires not only strong laws but also a cultural shift that respects the dignity of every woman. Society as a whole should reject all forms of injustice against women.

Judicial independence

The President firmly believes in judicial independence. She has said: “An independent judiciary is the cornerstone of our democracy. It is crucial that our judicial system remains free from external pressures and ensures justice for all.” This is an important stance for the country’s judicial system.

This is a belief that I, too, share. The judiciary must be insulated from external influences. Only a truly independent judiciary can protect rights and liberties.

Legal education

This is one area where the President has placed significant emphasis, connecting it to the process of nation-building. “Legal education is not just about learning the law; it is about understanding the principles of justice and fairness. Our law schools must prepare students to uphold these values in their professional lives,” is what she has said and her vision aligns with the belief that the pursuit of justice begins in the classroom.

Access to justice

The other important issue that the President has stressed upon is about access to justice. She believes that “…access to justice remains a challenge for many in our society, especially for women and marginalized communities.” Her efforts to bridge the gap between the law and the people it serves show her deep understanding of the fears and apprehensions many face when engaging with the legal system.

True justice can only be realized when it is accessible to all, regardless of social or economic status. We must dismantle the barriers that prevent marginalized communities from seeking and obtaining justice. This includes simplifying legal procedures, strengthening legal aid services and ensuring that the legal system is sensitive to the needs of historically excluded individuals.

Digital transformation

Recognizing the importance of technology in modernizing the legal system, the President has been a strong proponent of digital transformation. In her words: “Embracing digital technology in our legal system can significantly enhance efficiency and transparency. It is essential for ensuring timely justice and reducing the backlog of cases.”

Integrating technology into the legal system is not just an opportunity but a necessity. As we progress, it is crucial to leverage digital tools to make justice more efficient, transparent, and accessible. Technology can reduce delays, simplify legal processes, and ensure that justice is delivered promptly.

Gender justice

The President’s advocacy for gender justice and legal awareness is the cornerstone of her vision. She has rightly stated: “Ensuring gender justice requires a multi-faceted approach, including legal reforms and societal change,” and “Legal awareness is the first step towards ensuring access to justice for all.”

Achieving gender justice is one of the most significant challenges of our time. It requires not only legal reforms but also concerted efforts to change societal attitudes. Increasing legal awareness and simplifying procedures are crucial steps in demystifying the legal system, ensuring that justice is not delayed or denied based on gender or economic status.

President Droupadi Murmu’s tenure is marked by a profound commitment to legal reforms and justice for all. Her vision for an efficient, transparent, and inclusive legal system is both inspiring and essential for the nation’s progress. Her dedication to justice is not merely a professional commitment but a deeply personal mission. Her leadership, coupled with our collective efforts, will undoubtedly guide us toward a more just and equitable society.
