Supreme Court Collegium recommends appointment of Advocate Tejas Dhirenbhai Karia as judge of Delhi High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Advocate Tejas Dhirenbhai Karia for appointment as a judge of the Delhi High Court.

A resolution passed by the Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, said on Thursday that Advocate Karia, who was eminently fit and suitable for the role, would prove to be a value-addition to the Bench of the High Court of Delhi.

Upon perusing the judgments in the cases argued by Advocate Karia, the Collegium found that he was a domain expert in the law of arbitration and conducted issues of substance. The volume of cases on arbitration law required specialized handling, particularly in the High Court of Delhi. He has appeared in arbitration cases before the High Courts and the Supreme Court as well, noted the resolution passed on August 29.

It said the inputs provided by the Department of Justice indicated that nothing adverse to the integrity of the candidate had come to notice. Regarding the age of the candidate, the Collegium was of the view that the candidate fulfilled the threshold age criterion of 45 years as on the date of recommendation by the Collegium of the High Court.

On October 25, 2023, the then Chief Justice of the High Court of Delhi, in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues, recommended the name of Advocate Karia for appointment as judge of the High Court.

The resolution passed by the High Court in this context said that Advocate Karia had practised mainly in the field of arbitration. His appearances in the High Court may not be as many as would be expected, but his appearances in matters of significance before the Arbitration Tribunals make up for that, it added.
