The National Green Tribunal’s Western Zone Bench in Pune heard a Suo Motu matter relating to the issue of the thick layer of garbage on Mahim Railway Station’s tracks.
The cognizance has been taken of this matter suo motu on the basis of a news item published in a newspaper on April 10, 2024, sparked criticism and raised concerns over cleanliness.
During the hearing on September 23, 2024, the Municipal Commissioner of Bombay Municipal Corporation and Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board (MPCB) were represented.
The MPCB submitted a reply affidavit stating that they inspected the site and found huge garbage on siding tracks, but platforms and railway tracks were clean.
The MPCB issued proposed directions to Mahim Junction, Mumbai Western Railway Station, to dispose of solid waste scientifically and address garbage thrown from nearby slum areas.
The Central Railway Authority shifted responsibility to Western Railway, which was directed to clean the garbage within 15 days and make provisions for dust bins and scientific treatment of municipal solid waste.
The tribunal directed MPCB to submit a clear report on the status of debris clearance and actions taken, including levying environmental damages, within four weeks.
The MPCB must also clarify whether railway stations fall under the consent regime and, if so, under what category.
The next hearing is scheduled for November 28, 2024.
The original application was initially filed with the Principal Bench, New Delhi Bench but was transferred to the Western Zone Bench in Pune.
