Madhya Pradesh High Court dismisses plea seeking probe into cremation ground construction

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has dismissed a petition filed  seeking an inquiry into the construction of a cremation ground/burial ground in Indore.

The petitioners alleged that the state government and local authorities illegally changed the land use from a pond to a cremation ground, misappropriating public funds.

The court heard arguments from both sides, with the petitioners citing the Madhya Pradesh Gram Panchayat Rules, 1998, which prohibit using land for burial outside designated areas.

However, the respondents argued that the state government has the power to change land use and that the panchayat had passed a resolution to construct the cremation ground at the disputed site.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Vivek Rusia found no grounds to interfere with the decision, citing the statutory body’s authority to determine the location of the cremation ground.

The petition was dismissed due to lack of merit.
