Jammu and Kashmir High Court issues final notice to authorities on PIL seeking ban on plastic bags

The Jammu & Kashmir High Court has granted a final opportunity to respondents in a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Environmental Policy Group.

The PIL seeks implementation of a ban on polythene bags and awareness campaigns for citizens.

On October 17, 2024, a Division bench comprising Chief Justice Tashi Rabstan and Justice Puneet Gupta ordered respondents to submit a status report within four weeks, failing which a cost of Rs 50,000 will be imposed.

Respondents must detail steps taken to enforce the polythene ban and organize citizen awareness programs.

The court’s directive comes after respondents 3 and 17 filed their status reports, while others failed to comply with the July 8, 2024 order whereby the Court directed them to file the status report.

Next hearing of the matter is on December 3, 2024.
