Gauhati High Court disposes of PIL for improving facilities in Nagaland schools

The Gauhati High Court’s Kohima Bench has recently disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition seeking directions to the Union of India and the State of Nagaland to address various issues affecting Government Middle Schools (GMS) in Mon Town, Nagaland.

The petitioners, Chingai Nyamto Wangsha and Dr. Lemwang Chuwanglim, sought relief regarding the appointment of science and mathematics teachers, renovation of school buildings, construction of boundary fencing, libraries, and hostels, and provision of clean drinking water and computer facilities.

In response, the State of Nagaland filed an affidavit detailing the funds received and utilized under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan scheme for the schools.

After verifying the affidavit’s contents, the petitioners’ counsel expressed satisfaction with the State’s compliance but raised concerns about the absence of a science teacher at GMS Mon Town A.

The Additional Advocate General assured the court that the government would post a science teacher upon completion of teacher rationalization.

Considering the submissions, the bench of Justice Kakheto Sema and Justice Budi Habung disposed of the PIL, directing the State to immediately appoint qualified science teachers at GMS Mon Town A after rationalizing teachers.

The court acknowledged the State’s substantial compliance with the petitioners’ prayers and encouraged the government to continue addressing the schools’ infrastructure and staffing needs.
