Supreme Court denies bail to JDS leader Prajwal Revanna in rape and sexual assault case

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the bail petition filed by JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna in a rape and sexual assault case.

Appearing for the former Lok Sabha MP, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi contended that though the allegations were serious, the complaint did not have a specific allegation of rape.

Referring to the general elections, the Counsel submitted that all this became better once Revanna filed his nomination for the Lok Sabha polls, alleging that the JDS leader lost the elections because of the case.

However, the Bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma refused to grant bail to Revanna and dismissed the plea.

Rohatgi asked whether Revanna could apply after six months, to which the Court replied that it would not say anything.

In October this year, the Karnataka High Court denied Revanna bail, leading to the instant appeal before the Apex Court through Advocate Balaji Srinivasan.

Earlier on August 24, 2024, the SIT had filed a 2,144-page charge sheet in one of the four cases of sexual assault and harassment it was investigating against Prajwal Revanna. The charge sheet was filed before the special court hearing cases relating to MPs and MLAs.

The SIT booked Revanna under relevant Sections of law for raping a woman who worked as domestic help for his family.

Recently, the Supreme Court upheld the anticipatory bail granted to Bhavani Revanna, the mother of the JDS leader, in a case related to the kidnapping of the complainant-survivor.
