The Gauhati High Court has instructed the Assam Government to notify the Child Protection Policy and Juvenile Justice Rules.
This directive followed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Bachpan Bachao Andolan and Sampurna Behura.
The petition highlighted inadequate juvenile justice infrastructure, particularly the absence of Juvenile Justice Boards (JJBs) in several districts.
The Court noted two key concerns: inadequate JJBs and the government’s assurance to notify policies by year-end.
In response, the Court directed the Assam government to constitute JJBs in every district, notify the draft Child Protection Policy and Juvenile Justice Rules by year-end, and submit a report on JJB constitution, tenure, and notification by December 18, 2024.
